15 Super Dads: Akshay Kumar
This fortnight we bring you one celeb father everyday who deserves to be celebrated for his parenting skills and gives all dads #fathergoals to live up to. Today in focus is Bollywood’s original action man, Khiladi Akshay Kumar.
Claim to fame: Having begun his career as a waiter at Bangkok, Rajiv Bhatia aka Akshay Kumar returned to Mumbai to teach martial arts. But he found his calling in Bollywood after one of his students recommended him to take up modelling. Since then, the Khatron ka Khiladi (daredevil) has not looked back and has continued to taste success even 25 years after his first big break. He is a reputed martial artist and is known to do all his stunt scenes by himself, which has earned him the nickname, ‘Indian Jackie Chan’.
Fatherhood: The bold and daring actor is an extremely supportive father, as is illustrated by his encouraging his children, Aarav and Nitara, to excel in whatever they want to pursue, be it martial arts, cooking or any other activity. He believes in providing them with the space needed to develop and thrive, which he reiterated recently by saying, “I don’t push them, I try to motivate them. One needs to give kids the space to grow, and I do that. But instilling right values is important, that’s what my parents did, and that’s how I want it for my kids.” Interestingly, despite being one of the world’s richest actors, Akshay has said he won’t let his children have it easy since they have work hard for their comforts and luxuries. In fact, he is known to tax his children before they can rest a bit and enjoy the privileges of the wealthy. For example, when they were going on a family holiday recently, Aarav had to ensure he earned his first degree black belt before he too could travel business class with the rest, instead of economy class.
Lessons learnt: Being a man does not mean you can’t be emotional and sensitive. Going all out for your children is one of the greatest privileges and pleasures you can enjoy, so enjoy it when you still can. Don’t be afraid to show your love for them, since that is all they will remember long after you have gone. In the superstar’s own words, “To all the fathers out there, hug your kids for as long as you can, because it’s your grip that makes them so strong to stand there and face it all.”
