15 Super Dads: Will Smith
This fortnight we bring you one celeb father everyday who deserves to be celebrated for his parenting skills and gives all dads #fathergoals to live up to. Today in focus is Hollywood actor and producer, the uber cool Will Smith.
Claim to fame: A reputed Hollywood actor, producer, singer and songwriter, Will Smith is the winner of four Grammy Awards who has an endless string of popular and acclaimed films in his kitty, such as Suicide Squad, Ali, Hitch, Wild Wild West, Bad Boys series, Men in Black series, Hancock, Focus and others.
Fatherhood: One of the most cited examples in the film industry about a father-son duo is Will Smith and Jaden Smith, who first appeared on screen in the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness. The talented actor and his equally talented son are a perfect picture of the ideal father and son and make for fantastic co-stars as well, as is proved in film such as The Pursuit of Happyness and After Earth. Despite Jaden sporting skirts and becoming the face of a popular fashion house’s womenswear campaign, Will Smith remains unfazed about his son’s fashion choices. Instead he praises him by saying, “There’s a really powerful internal quality as an artist that as parents we encourage. You’ve got to get out on the edge. You have to try things, you have to be comfortable doing things people don’t agree with and you have to be comfortable with doing things that you could fail. And Jaden is 100 per cent fearless. He will do anything.” The actor, who also has an older son named Trey and a younger daughter named Willow, has encouraged her too to follow her heart and try out a career in singing, dancing and acting. Will Smith’s modern sensibilities and understanding and liberal nature makes him a perfect addition to this list which celebrates ideal celeb dads from around the world.
Lessons learnt: Will Smith is known to be an immensely liberal father who gives his children complete freedom to do their will and express themselves, which is an inspiring quality every parent must possess. In this age when new career options and lifestyle choices are becoming increasingly available to youngsters, it is our duty as parents to guide and inspire them, but at the same time not pose as impediments on their path to success. Let them make their own choices. Falling and making mistakes are a good teacher since time immemorial, so don’t be afraid to let your children try their hand at different things and learn along the way.
