The Legendary Zen Buddhist Master Thich Nhat Hanh On How To Do “Hugging Meditation”
To love each other with open hearts is perhaps the most divine thing that anyone can do – yet we rarely give each other this gift because we’re afraid of susceptibility.
However, the revolutionary Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh has investigated why it is essential and how we can accomplish overboard living.
During the late 1960s, the Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh fabricated an exquisite technique to promote buried openhearted love. He framed this wonderful technique in the US when realization dawned upon him that people in the West strived with physical touch, like hugging. According to him, hugging is an effortless way to demobilize boundary and loose open our love.

“According to the usual procedure, one has to really hug the person he/she is holding. One has to make the other person feel very certain and honest in his/her arms, not just for the sake of appearance, patting them on the back to feign presence, but breathing advisedly and hugging with all your spirit, soul, body, and heart.
Hugging meditation is a routine activity facilitating mindfulness. If one breathes deeply, holding the person he/she loves, the intensity of care and appreciation will flow down into that person and he/she will feel bloomed and nourished just like a flower.”
Hugging is the essence of core Zen principles. As elaborated by Nhat Hanh-
“Hugging is a deeply rooted practice or routine in which one needs to be totally engrossed. The presence required should be 100%. Every individual can train himself/herself to live every instance of daily life like that.
Start by standing facing each other. Breathe slowly and deeply to authorize your true presence. Gradually open your arms and hug your specially loved one. Amid the first in-breath and out-breath, become acquainted that you both are alive. Eventually with the second in-breath and out-breath, ponder upon where you will both be a couple of hundred years from now. Finally with the third in-breath and out-breath, become aware of how valuable and worthy it is that you are both still alive.”
Hugging in this fashion makes the other person real and alive. You start to feel the warmth and stability of the other one in the present moment. To perform this generous act is what renowned Zen Buddhist monk, peace activist and teacher Thich Nhat Hanh threw light upon. He further explained: “Spirituality is a practice that provides relief, builds up communication, and brings about transformation.”
This is a simple practice which fosters mutual understanding at the crux of spiritual intimacy. Hugging, when done correctly, brings a beam of joy for the other person as well. The warmth and love within the relationship is accelerated when Hugging Meditation is followed. Thich Nhat Hanh, with his spiritual mastery, explained how to do this kind of meditation which leads to inner harmony, mutual satisfaction, mutual respect, mutual nourishment and mutual understanding.
Respecting each other’s individuality is the core of this technique whereas performing it in a right manner will make every individual self-contented.
